Character Chart for my fic~ Before There Were Fairy Tales...
5 years before she meets InuYasha, Kagome falls through time to meet his brother after the sudden, tragic death of her father. After a chance encounter with a powerful warrior, the ten year old girl finds herself making friends with a snobby princess and a demon with a serious height complex. Yet when one of her new friends is attacked, Kagome soon becomes caught up in a war that threatens to destroy the people she's come to consider family, as well as herself. This is a tale about a friendship that endures the centuries, a sacrifice that redefined the course of history and a love that defies the boundaries of time.
A very good working concept sketch for the characters.
Vision: Aside from my remaining uncertainty about Kagome and Izayoi's height (with Tsukau supposed to be a giant of a man, Kagome is more than half his height at 10 - doesn't seem quite right), I love the way you can see the relation between the character heights. The designs on their clothing are beautiful, and the characters are diverse in personality, which you can really see in the drawing.
Originality: I'm really not sure how to judge this on fan work, so I'm basing my opinion on style, which is clearly your own. The majority of the (visible) characters also have unique designs, being either original characters or having no existing design from Takahashi.
Technique: This is really good quality for a concept sketch, something I appreciate. The line work is crisp, and you've captured individual character personalities really well.
Impact: Overall I'm very impressed by this drawing, regardless of small things I would want fixed. This serves its purpose well of giving readers a good mental image of key characters in your story.
> i know who one is! i know who one is! and if i'm right, then he's big, fluffy, and we all love to torture him with our fangirliness! and last but not least, i'm a wee bit jello of your characters. TT.TT they're so original and awesome. and your art style's cool. i love it. Love it all.
Thank you so much! I'm so happy you like them! (squee-ing over having her art called "cool") I'm hoping to do some more fanart of my OC's Kuenai and Tsukau, so it pleases me that you like them! I have two more OC's who will be making an appearance, and their designs should also be fun!!!
As to whether or not you are correct, I'm not even gonna lie, Sesshomaru is in the lineup. But... which one is he??? I leave that to you :3
It was a lot of fun! I have the base steps here if you'd like an idea of how I did it: [link]
It's not really step-by-step, but I draw the bases on regular paper building up from stick/scribble masses, and then darken the outlines into anatomy. Then I use tracing paper and clothe and detail the characters :3 I try to make the line up look like they are slightly interacting with each other so that they aren't just standing there lifelessly :3 gives the viewer a better idea of their personalities!
I clearly don't hang out with 10 year old girls enough, because I can't help thinking Kagome is too tall and curvy XD I definitely think the thing throwing me off the most though is her curves - at 10, she really wouldn't be that hippy, so her clothing should fall much more straight on her, like a rectangle.
Also, Tsukau is damn big! Just the way I like my men!
If you look at the other post that has the base drawing, found here: [link] you can see it's not her that is curvy, the yukata just hangs funny
I sweat, she's a stick, long and lanky! That damn yukata wasn't cooperating though- I might go back and try and fix it again lol She's supposed to be a little tall for her age >:3 I again refer you to the other chart, as it kinda shows the measurement lines I used! She's exactly one half Tsukau's full height, and I mean EXACTLY... but that's not too odd, since around 10-12 girls start hitting growth spurts and they level off in height between 15-18.
Most girls I know that don't get very tall tend to be taller than average at the younger age- since in canon Kagome only hits 5' 3", I'm having her be a bit of a bean pole for now Izayoi's all average like, 'cept for a bit of chubby-chub to her, what with her being a lazy princess and all XD Kagome's height also come into play a little later with another character, also age 10, who may or may not have a height complex that rivals Edward Elric's X3
But I'm glad you like! They wouldn't leave me be til I drew them all, so, tadaaaa!
And yes, he is very big! When I originally came up with his character he was all average like and kinda thin and lean, but the moment I started writing him in the story he sort of... grew... and grew... and... well... damn. I'm currently in love with Tsukau, especially since I know exactly how his character is going to develop now that he's whispering in me ear He makes me sooooo happy XD
I actually did see that, though afterward, and I stand by my opinion XD I don't know how yukata hang, but it strikes me that it should flow just a bit straighter.
Oh boy, height complexes! I'm going to trust your opinion height wise, because you seem to know a lot about it XD I honestly can't really remember what it was like at ten, or how tall I was...wait a minute! I have a wall in my house with my height on it over the years. *checks it* At age ten I was 4'9", and you've made Kagome 4'6". ...Well, I formally withdraw all height complaints. At age 10 I was taller than you've made Kagome, so by default her height has to be acceptable.
Tsukau is making me most happy as well! I need a man like him in my life XD He's the kinda guy that when he hugs you he'd completely surround you *blissful sigh*
